TRITUBE TO MY DAD

After a pause!  Blogging continues as life must go on. Every life comes to this world with a purpose and will exit once it’s done; leaving all the family, friends, well -wishers, desires, dreams, passion, habits, ambitions, attachments, and commitments  behind.

Does every soul attain salvation?  I believe there are very few people who live even after their death through their great deeds. One such person that I am proud to write about is my dad Ve. Sri.  Aka Srinivas s/o Venkataswamappa .

Srinivas was born on April 26th 1949, in a lower middle class family in Bangalore, India. With lots of hardship and struggle he completed his matriculation and made it till getting a State Government Job. Srinivas got married to Nirmala Devi and had two children Anu and Raghu. In spite of being in a modest family he always inculcated the habit of giving, sharing, loving, and living happily in his small family. He encouraged his wife to study after marriage helped her to pursue a career, never restricted her to the four walls of kitchen.

“Dad is every child’s first hero”- I felt so much honored to be daughter of ve.sri at every stage of my life. As a kid my dad used to visit my school every year to donate books for under privileged students. He started a socio-cultural non-profit organization M. Ramamurthy Kannada Balaga in the year 1968, managed the same for four decades till his last rites. He used to make entire family participate in pro-kannada and cultural activities, food & clothes donations to earthquake and tsunami victims, blood donation camps, performing dance & drama in fund raising programs  for spastic kids, underprivileged women  etc.

Every summer he sent me to varieties of summer camps, swimming lessons, car driving, acting school, yoga classes etc. it is very uncommon in a middle class family in India, even today they think having a girl child is a liability and they should save money only for their marriage. Just give them basic education so that they pass marriage test with flaring colors later they are on their own.

My dad bred leadership skills in me. He made me secure University Rank, yet not compromising on my co-curricular activities. My dad was president of Gandhinagar, Kannada Sahitya Parishath consecutively for three times, similarly I was student union president twice in college and school, I organized Intercollegiate Management Fest, I was best outgoing student in school and college for both academics and co-cultural activities. I won prizes for debate competition at district and state level.  Won several dance and drama competitions. Did anchoring for various social events organized by my dad through his NGO and also did anchoring for events organized by many other NGO’s as well.

I used to compete with my dad in getting awards and accolades and being part of newspaper headlines.  When I received Best Achiever Award from ISRO chairman at M.S Ramaiah Institute of Technology for my academic achievements, my dad received Kannada Kattalu award from Kannada Sahitya Parishath. He recently was felicitated with Kempegowda award by Karnataka State Government for his selfless service for the kannada & cultural activities and other social services done for the past four decades.

He encouraged me to evolve as a person, supported me to choose my own path in both professional and personal life. My dad thought me to be a responsible citizen with strong moral grounds. He was a living example for balancing personal life and shouldering social responsibilities in-spite of being part of modest middle class society with his limited source of income. I remember once my dad saying he wants to help an orphan who was suffering from chronic disease, where I got into an argument with him saying we are middle class self-sufficient family, leading a comfortable life but we can’t afford to take care of another person, how can you help that boy? He kept quiet for a while later he gave him shelter in his own NGO office and bought him some stickers  which he could sell in front of schools and earn his livelihood. There he lived for many years happily, independently with honor and self-respect, till he died. That incidence touched my heart and made me feel that to help others you don’t have to always have loads of money but just a big heart.

There was also a writer in my dad who wrote and published several books on kannada and pro-cultural activities. His last book “kannada Chilume” was published by Kannada Sahitya parishath on 11th Nov 2014.

My dad passed away on 16th Oct 2014, today is his first death anniversary. Surprisingly my mom has filled his role to run the NGO he started, as she was very timid and always worked behind the screen with him. Today she is continuing his good deeds by donating food & clothes to an orphan home in Bangalore on the occasion of his death ceremony. His struggle to make his family members better human & people with social concern  did not go in vein. We the entire family always stood by his divine thoughts & deeds when he was alive and will continue to do so…. as long as we can. Hope his soul will rest in peace.

Love you & Miss you Daddy!

Is US stock market booming, resilient or setting stage for another bubble?

Amidst shrinking US economy in the first quarter of this year, stock market has shown strong rally past few trading sessions. Dow Jones is at all-time high, it could be due to improved employment rate, growing export & auto sales, increased expected earnings, fed not finalizing on roll back of quantitative easing and uncertainty about expected rate hike. It leaves many perplexed to understand whether US is showing positive signs of future or cautioning a stock market bubble?

If we look at world economy Europe is still struggling to recover, Middle East is facing several social, political issues like infiltration and terrorist attacks; Asia is paced for steady growth.

As per fed “Although unemployment rate has fallen significantly, wage hike is not up to the mark indicating any sort of higher growth or leading towards inflation, stock market valuations are not unequivocal as social media and bio tech stocks are overvalued”, which is refraining fed from  announcing rate hike with immediate effect.

Home sales are growing slowly with 30 year mortgage lending rate being low and home prices are surging sky high. Aftermaths of 2008 financial crisis is still evident as many financial institutions like credit Suisse, PNB Paribas, CITI, and Bank of America are still making good the damage caused due to the sales of sub-standard mortgage bonds, through settling their dues with department of justice.

However, Q2 earnings of many companies in the Wall Street are optimistic, showing signs of strong fundamental growth in real economy, setting Dow Jones record high once again. IPO’s are back on the main stream and increased number of M&A activities are indicating progressive economy. This makes us believe that flags of growth soaring high but the sense of caution & lessons learnt in the past will ensure that 2008 fall might not recur at least in the near future.

Sentiment to Science

A fine morning aroma of coffee encircled my room; here comes my mom to wake me up and say “happy birthday” with a present of new outfit along with a pair of high heel shoes which I had always aspired to own. As every birthday my parents made my 10th birthday very special, by taking me along with my 14 year old brother to a lunch at the then famous restaurant Nandhini Paradise in Bangalore and for a movie called The Lion King. It made a lasting impression on me as it was a dream come to true to watch musical animated movie on a big screen for the first time. Appealing story and breath taking performances has encapsulated the minds of audience leaving such amazing message to ponder. Although it is based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet it seemed very close to Indian philosophies. Later this story was adapted to Broadway in the year 1997 leading it become first ever show to gross $1 billion.

The Broadway Theater District is a popular tourist attraction in New York City.Broadway theatre, commonly called simply Broadway, are theatrical performances presented in one of the 40 professional theaters with 500 or more seats located in the Theater District and Lincoln Center along Broadway in the Manhattan borough of New York City.

The leading character Simba in The Lion King still lingers in my mind, not just me but many millions of people who have seen its original movie in 1994 and then 3D version in 2011 along with its Broadway version of stage play continually since 1997 across 16 countries. It makes me wonder -How can people watch same story again and again at Broadway? How Disney is able to keep or rather increase their viewership? It is not just the artistic ingredients or creative maintenance that is leading to its success but their effective utilization of modern skills and techniques right from the on stage presentation to their background functionalities. It is this reason I felt sentiment to science unravels The Lion King success story.

It took many by surprise to know that The Lion King is running in a small theatre compared to other shows, their average ticket price is only130$ visa-vis 170$ of The book of Mormons’, it is neither  the longest running show on Broadway as this spot is taken by  “Phantom of  the Opera”, nor the longest running musical show. Then what is it contributing to their billion dollar triumph?

Initial success is completely attributed to the determination and vision of director Julie Taymor who was once laughed at when she wanted to bring lion king on stage. Later she became first women director to win Tony award. Further the tactfulness and the strategic approach of Disney lead to its success, this includes –the dynamic pricing through successful adaptation of algorithmic model of pricing which was only part of hotel and airlines industries for a long time, involving 2 layers – “First, the range of prices across the theater is set according to an estimate of the demand for a particular performance, based on the 15 years of past (box office) from which to extrapolate annual trends.  Second, after tickets go on sale, Disney re-examines each (performance) to see how demand is shaping up in reality, and then tweaks pricing accordingly.”

Although all the other producers follow the same approach of using regression tool to price, they are not as successful as Disney in extracting consumer surplus efficiently this could be due to the Disney’s strength of 140 people team of business analytics who are vigilant about the trends, competitive analysis, consumer tastes and preferences in entertainment industry, helping them to take right decisions on price discrimination, timely promotions, group discounts, early bird offers etc.

Disney has not left any opportunities untapped right from the ideal Minskoff theatre location (particularly its lack of a second balcony, where seats tend to be lower priced) to growing tourism in New York City crossing 54million people a year and the substantial awareness along with word of mouth created due to its movie popularity & its visibility from new York times square.

All these acts as seasoning on the salad when the show, instead of losing its sheen over a period of time is rather glowing avidly with continually improved version of sets, props and artistry. This gradual transition from sentiment to science has made The Lion King to create a milestone of its own, soaring high yet not losing its ground.

Do civilians need firearms?

How cool it is to see heroes tossing their guns in a thrilling chase or a fight, it takes our breath away to watch such enthralled moments on big screen. All inspired by characters in movies or TV shows almost every individual irrespective of their age would want to own guns as it acts as symbol of style, power, and security.

Nancy Lanza who was a school teacher at Newtown, Connecticut; she was very passionate about guns and had collection of them at home. She also use to teach her kids on shooting skills, had she known that  it would  take her  own life one day, probably she would never have done that.

One horrific day a boy  picks up the gun shots his mom ( Nancy Lanza) and goes to her school and kills 20 innocent kids, who were barely 5-6 yrs old, and were all 1st graders, along with 6 adults, at last he kills himself leaving no traces to identify the causes of such a heinous, barbaric, inhuman act. Some might say he was a psychopath, he had troubled childhood, or his parents failed to take safety measures while storing the guns at home, well whatever may be the reason the life gone will never return, the damage caused by  dangerous weapon like guns are irreversible and irreparable.

Why do civilians need guns? There are many more incidences like Newtown, Connecticut, where innocent people have become victims of gun shots, be it Colorado shooting, shooting at Los Angeles school, most recent 2 policemen shoot out at Las Vegas etc., everywhere it has disturbed the civil society rather than doing good. Many officials decided to place more armed guards in front of schools. Is violence answer for violence? Can’t we have a world without guns?

Although there were many accidental shooting incidences causing death of several innocent civilians still people would want to possess guns, blaming all the mistakes on psycho paths, culture disorientation, lack of safety measures of gun handling etc.

Veterans having guns like A.K. 47, A.K 56 etc. is completely sensible as they guard the boarders of the nation, protect us from terrorists and infiltrators. But why do we need it in our civil society? Although amendment 2 of American constitution provides right to own fire arms for self-defense purposes, is it really serving the purpose?

Many people believe that having a gun makes them feel secure, empowers them from enemies? However at this juncture it is imperative to answer the question who is our real enemy in civil society? Is it a gun or another person having a gun?  Having gun leaves us with fear, every person wants to own one thinking their enemy might have one too, how do we store it at home away from reach of children, and yet it should be accessible the moment there is a break-in or an attack from enemy, here it creates first level of fear, later they fear who would pull the trigger first? This fear always prevails as long as we have guns in our society. How wonderful it is to have a society where there are neither guns nor guns falling into the wrong hands, and everybody lives with mutual trust and harmony.

Are guns really empower us and removes our fear? Or are we becoming scapegoats for that small segment of the capitalists who wants to profit and build their businesses by creating undue market for firearms.

Yes it might sound insane to say that ban guns and shut down arms industry as it generates billions of dollar revenue to the government which is very essential in this current situation of fiscal cliff, and it also has created close to hundred thousand jobs in the industry. However it is inevitable that we need to get out of this gun culture gradually and it has to happen on a phased manner. Currently 1:1 is the ratio of gun possession among American citizens which is highest in the world it is a very dangerous sign, action must be taken immediately to confiscate guns and reduce the presence of firearms in the civil society, it is the only way where we can re-instill faith, peace and harmony among people.

Countries like Australia have been successful in reducing the existence of guns among the civilians. This is how we can encourage our future generations to seek the weapon of knowledge, righteousness, peace, humility, culture and traditions. instead of harmful weapon like guns.

At last “living in a gun free society may not guarantee peace but assures it over a period of time, having guns guarantees death either intentionally or unintentionally”. Let us create a better world filled with love and affection providing both mental & physical safety and leaving no rooms for harmful weapons like guns.

America known as land of opportunities and home for talented people by choice not only by birth

Currently one of the most debated topics focusing NRI community in USA is  Proposed Rule to Extend Employment Authorization to Spouses of Certain H-1B Workers

While discussing the pros and cons of this proposal one should not forget the very root of how America as a country formed by several immigrants about 200 years ago, who led the nation into the most powerful country in the world; due to its open culture, tolerance to diversities of skin, language, race, identities, custom and traditions.

The US government is hoisting the flag of America by trying to understand the problems of high skilled legal immigrants who are in the process of becoming their nationals in coming years, apart from only focusing on low skilled illegal immigrants from neighboring countries.

In my opinion It is very important to make this proposal a rule for the following reasons

  1. Ambiguous process of green card application where number of years it might take is totally unpredictable.
  2. It is not advisable for highly skilled H4 visa holders to study in US only for the sake of getting CPT/OPT. Although some have tried this route at last they have to move to H1B filing que before their OPT expires, in case if they miss H1B filing cycle they loose the work permit and again move back to H4. It is kinda vicious circle some make it; some don’t especially when they fall short of luck in lottery system.
  3. It is very hard for H4 visa holders to get H1B sponsorship from direct employer due to waiting period H1B imposes ie, we apply for H1B in april and can work only from October, no employer would like to sponsor H1B in april and wait till you join in October. Last few years H1B application quota is getting over in 5-7 days therefore your sponsor company cant apply H1 in september and recruit you in October.
  4.  If H4 visa holder starts a business they can not operate it, therefore no motivation or incentive for them to start a business and contribute to the US economy.
  5. Getting work authorization does not guarantee jobs as it depends on each individuals capabilities to run in the rat race and stand apart with many qualified individuals in America. After not working for several years many EAD holders have opted to continue as home makers due to their lack of confidence & motivation to fight the competition. Therefore it is not a threat for the current employees.
  6. There is no reason why H4 visa holder should be prevented from working when L2 visa holders with same dependent status can work and be independent.
  7. It is misconstrued that all H4 visa holders might only fight for tech related jobs, there are many H4’s  having specialized skills in  areas like biotech, finance, fine arts,Ayurveda etc.
  8. This move will only increase the competitive spirit among current employees to keep them selves dynamic, updated and on their toes rather than letting complacency to creep in.

This proposal helps retain talented people in the country and  gives an opportunity of fair play for all to pursue their American dream z.

Since “America is well known as land of opportunities and home for talented people by choice not only by birth”, this move of US government is highly recommended.
